Summer? We hardly know ‘er!

July Recap

In spite of the storms, the heatwaves, the floods, and the mosquito swarms, we made it through July!

This season has served as a harsh reminder that the climate crisis is here in full swing, and happening all around us. We know that this is not normal. We also know that small actions do count for something, whether it’s cycling instead of driving, refilling instead of re-buying, thrifting or swapping instead of buying new, choosing plant-based options, attending an activist meeting or workshop, organizing in your community, or protesting, it all matters in the grand scheme of things, and it does make a meaningful difference. ERC is here to help Edmontonians make sustainable choices, build eco-friendly habits, and bring people together to team up and fight back!!

This July, we had our monthly repair cafe, hosted Masc Sunday’s 1st birthday party/clothing swap, market, & live music, Neutral Ground’s youth jam & community market, Cherry Pit’s disability pride night, our own dance party, our summer clothing swap and Solar Fest, climate cafe, live bluegrass, and more. We were also featured on CBC radio!

It’s been great to see the Piazza liven up and have so many artists and community-minded people come and use the space.

Family Dance and Movement Classes Saturday, August 15 10:30-11:10 am and 11:15-Noon

Dance can strengthen bonds between family and friends. Come and play with us as we move with all members of the community and learn dance choreography to engage the whole family. Classes will include a variety of style and many fun moves! All ages and abilities.

About Isabelle: 

Isabelle Rousseau is a contemporary dance artist based in Amiskwaciy Waskahikan (Edmonton). She lives in the neighbourhood and has been teaching dance to children for close to 15 years. She makes sure classes are accessible and welcoming so that we learn in a creative and supportive environment. She works with different companies and organizations, including Good Women Dance Collective, City Arts Centre and the City of Edmonton. She teaches different styles of dance (ballet, jazz, hip hop, traditional French Canadian, somatic) and does her best to recognize the importance of traditions.

Come to the Palestine Solidarity Market, fundraising for Bridge of Solidarity, a mutual aid group in Gaza. Students for Justice in Palestine, in collaboration with Earth’s Refillery and Paper Birch Books, will be selling tshirts, stickers, zines, books, and much more!

As I (Christina) slowly improve my web design skills, so does our website. We have a brand new Cafe page: https://earthsrefillerycoop.ca/cafe, a Land Acknowledgement/Solidarity Statement: https://earthsrefillerycoop.ca/land-acknowledgement, and a new look on the home page and bulk product pages!

Co-op member Rachel Slomba has been taking some amazing photos for us, which has helped bring our website to life! Now, web surfers can get a sense of the atmosphere and the product selection here, before they even arrive.

Another incredible co-op member, Aryn Effert-Fox took some 3D photos so we can now proudly offer a 3D walkthrough of our space on Google Maps. These images function not only as a way to show off our space, but they are a great tool for folks facing mobility challenges or anxiety about visiting new places.
